East Malaysia

East Malaysia History

Wild Asia began its work in Sabah in 2013, launching in Kampung Toniting, Beluran, in partnership with Wilmar. Working with 43 smallholders across 253 hectares, the group earned Malaysia’s first RSPO smallholder certification in September 2013, setting a precedent for sustainable small-scale farming. In 2014, with support from Nestle, the work expanded to Kampung Batu Puteh and Sukau, Kinabatangan, bringing 36 more smallholders and 182 hectares into sustainable practice.

From a few small villages, the Wild Asia Group Scheme (WAGS) has grown across Sabah. Today, it reaches approximately 2,000 smallholders in key regions including Tawau, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Beluran, Telupid, Tongod, Ranau and Keningau.

Challenges

Smallholder-Driven Livelihoods

Rural economies across Sabah rely heavily on independent smallholders who cultivate family-owned oil palm plots as their primary source of income.

Conventional Farming Risks

Decades of conventional practices have left smallholders dependent on synthetic agrochemicals, leaving them vulnerable to market price fluctuations.

Supply Chain Fragmentation

Independent farmers often operate in isolation without direct links to mills, refineries, or consumer brands.

High Input Costs & Soil Degradation

Escalating costs for commercial fertilizers combined with declining soil biology squeeze farm profit margins and reduce long-term crop resilience.

Market Exclusion & Certification Compliance

Complex international standards (RSPO/MSPO) and strict zero-deforestation mandates are nearly impossible for individual smallholders to navigate without support.

Farmer Commitment & Adoption

Hesitancy to abandon traditional farming habits, certification fatigue, and fear of initial yield loss make securing and maintaining long-term farmer dedication difficult.
